Lawyers for several of the defendants in a string of cases connected to a U.S. probe of Floridian telecoms companies allegedly paying bribes in Haiti said former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide is the person identified as “Official B” in the indictment. His lawyer declined to comment about the Justice Department’s investigation because the ex-president hasn’t been charged with any crime, but said there’s been a smear campaign orchestrated by the U.S. against his client since his election in 1990. Evidence of possible corruption by several senior Reserve Bank of Australia officials and other business figures allegedly connected to the bank’s note-printing bribery scandal was handed over to the federal police. None of those named in the report appeared to be contacted for comment. (The Age)
